Hi Im working on an assignment for my international banking/finance.

The question is why don’t arbitrage opportunities exist for long periods of time?

If anyone knows it, help me.

Arbitrage occurs when the price of one financial instrument is different in more than one location. This can happen frequently in cases where stocks trade in multiple countries. For example British Petroleum shares might be selling for 71 lbs on the London Exchange, but only for the equivalent of 70.80 lbs on the New York Stock Exchange. A really savy trader will notice this discrepancy, buy the shares off of the New York Stock Exchange and then sell them on the London exchange for a quick profit. When they purchase the shares on the NYSE that causes the price on the NYSE to go up, when they sell on the London exchange that causes the price there to go down, so the result is that the price of BP on the NYSE and the London exchange equal out.

Since we live in such a high tech age with computers and whatnot, arbitrage is even more efficient. Computers at brokerage companies will constantly scan the market for arbitrage opportunities and as soon as they find them, will instantly make the trades for the quick profit. This has made the time window of opportunity for arbitrage extremely short.

There is one exception of arbitrage that is available for quite some time. This is Merger and Acquisition arbitrage. When a company offers to buy another one out the buying company will declare a price that they want to pay for the other company (say its $10 per share). Shares in the company being bought will almost always instantaneously jump to about $9.80 or somewhere shy of $10. The theory is that the market is not 100% sure about when or if the acquisition will actually take place. It is an arbitrage opportunity though in that you can buy the shares for $9.80 and eventually have them bought from you by the buying company for $10. This window of opportunity may be open for months at a time though until a final decision is made, all the paperwork is done, and you receive the money for your shares.

I have jsut finished my first semester of MBA. I have now got to select my elective which I am very confused about!

Option 1. Finance. The electives are
a. Corporate finance
b. Consulting for Corporate Excellence
c. Financial Management of International Business

Option 2.
a. International Banking
b. Bank Lending and Credit Risk
c. Bank Value and Performance

I am not sure which one to take? I really wanted to take Option 2 but it narrows my career choice. Further it is not available on par time basis which means I may have to take days off from work which my present employer wont be happy about.

Option 1 seems OK. But I dont feel happy about it for some reason as it is too general

I am also thinking of studying for CFA or Investment Management Certificate in future. I really do want to get in to investement or banking field. But which of the above MBA option is good?

Please note Option 2 has been discontinued from this year for some reason. University is London South Bank

In my opinion, no one should be able to get an MBA without taking Corporate Finance. I don’t understand how 1b would help you in finance.

I don’t think any of the classes in Option 2 will help you with the CFA exams. On the other hand, 1a and 1b would help.

This is an SOS call. Please help me

You’re opening yourself wide open to every scammer on the web when you post like this.

Any firm that promises you a loan at a low rate will invariably request a large up front fee first…After you mail this you’ll never hear from them again.

I’m a confused Finance/Mandarin student with a whole lot of options it seems. Doing something unique, (like peace corp), seems to be a better boost for doing some sort of work with the Chinese economy, as opposed to going directly to work for any of the major banks. Any suggestions on how a Chicago kid can speak Mandarin and make it back to China?

Joining the Communist Party might help, although I don’t think it’s a good idea in the long run. Remember the Soviet Union.

I want to deal with finance, such as investment banking, but I always want to do something that is government related.

help?

Those two majors are great for getting a job. If you are interested in government employment, I would recommend starting with the federal government job site, http://www.usajobs.gov

They have a Career Interest Center:
http://www.usajobs.gov/careers/index.asp?ic=1

You can take an Interest Guide Questionnaire, or just specify which field(s) you’re interested in and they’ll show you a list of related government positions. Click on Career Interest Areas, then Leading-Influencing, then scroll through the list of job titles. You’ll see many related to finance, such as Financial Analysis. You’ll also see job titles like International Relations, if that interests you. This site lists job titles that you would find both in the federal government and in state governments.

Once you get an idea of some of the job titles, go back to the usajobs homepage to do searches for open positions. This way you can get an idea of what an actual job would be like.

You can also check out http://www.usa.gov, the official website of the U.S. government. Click on the Jobs, Education & Volunteerism section:
http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Education_Training.shtml

Also, take a look at the site Making the Difference:
http://www.makingthedifference.org/index.shtml

It’s about working in public service (government) jobs, and it has good info about job types, internships, the federal student loan repayment program, and more. Right now under the Internships section, there is a posting for a financial auditor student intern in the Government Accountability Office. If you’re a student, sounds like something you might be interested in!

Finally, if you don’t want to work directly for the government, check out WetFeet’s investment banking careers section:
http://www.wetfeet.com/Careers-and-Industries/Careers/Investment-Banking.aspx

Scroll down to the Career Tracks section – you might be interested in public finance.

I hope this helps answer your question. Good luck!

thte banks in the dominican Republic want over 40% down of the value of the property. i wonder if i could find a bank that would finance the loan here in the united states

No, you will not. This is because they will not be able to seize the property if you default.

Quick and easy way to purchase silver:
http://silversnowball.com/1861/

Paul Grignon’s 47-minute animated presentation of “Money as Debt” tells in very simple and effective graphic terms what money is and how it is being created. It is an entertaining way to get the message out. The Cowichan Citizens Coalition and its “Duncan Initiative” received high praise from those who previewed it. I recommend it as a painless but hard-hitting educational tool and encourage the widest distribution and use by all groups concerned with the present unsustainable monetary system in Canada and the United States.
